How early can I book an MOT?

In the UK, most vehicles are legally required to have their first MOT test three years after registration, followed by an MOT every year to ensure they remain safe and roadworthy.

For many drivers, MOTs can feel stressful, especially if the test results in a failure. But with a bit of forward planning, you can reduce the risk of being without your car while still making the most of your current certificate.

The good news is that you can book your MOT test up to one month (minus one day) before its expiry date, giving you flexibility to plan ahead without losing any time on your new certificate.

MOT rules explained

The key rule to understand is the ‘one month minus a day’ window. This means that you can take your car for its MOT up to one month (minus one day) before the expiry date and still keep the same renewal date for the following year.

For example, if your MOT expires on the 15th of May, you can book your test from the 16th of April. If it passes, your renewal date will remain the 15th of May for the following year.

The system is designed to give drivers some flexibility, allowing you to arrange your MOT in advance without affecting your annual renewal cycle.

Can you book an MOT earlier than that?

Yes, technically you can book your MOT at any time. However, if you schedule the test earlier than the one month minus a day window, your new MOT will run from the date of the test, not your current expiry date.

This means any remaining time on your existing certificate will be lost. Most drivers choose to wait until the recommended window to avoid cutting their MOT unnecessarily short.

When is the best time to book an MOT test?

The ideal time to book your MOT is around 3-4 weeks before the expiry date or the ‘one month (minus a day) window’.

This provides a useful repair buffer, giving you time to address any faults and complete a retest without being left off the road once your MOT expires. It also helps avoid last-minute booking issues, especially during busy periods.

What happens if your MOT expires?

If your MOT has expired, you can no longer legally drive your vehicle on the road.

The only exceptions are if you are:

  • Driving to a pre-booked MOT test or,
  • Taking the vehicle to a garage for pre-arranged repairs.

In both cases, the vehicle must be deemed roadworthy. If it isn’t you can’t drive it at all.

Driving without a valid MOT can result in a fine of up to £1000 and may affect your insurance or any claim made in the event of an accident.

What happens if you fail an MOT?

If your car fails its MOT, it means it doesn’t meet the required safety or environmental standards and will need repairs before it can pass.

If your previous MOT certificate is still valid, you may still be able to drive the vehicle until it expires. However, this only applies if the faults are not classed as dangerous and the car remains roadworthy.  A valid MOT does not override the legal requirement for a vehicle to remain roadworthy at all times.

If any dangerous faults have been identified, you must not drive the vehicle until the issues have been repaired, even if your current MOT hasn’t yet expired.
